The DeKalb and Steuben County SWCD’s have joined together to form a working group, “Soil Guardians of DeKalb-Steuben.”
Our Mission
The Soil Guardians of DeKalb-Steuben working group will help educate and advocate to improve soil health on small-scale farms and urban gardens.

Our Soil Sampling Program
Upon request, the Soil Guardians of DeKalb-Steuben will visit your small-scale farm or garden to discuss your land uses and goals. A soil sample will be collected and sent to a local laboratory for analysis. You will receive a follow-up site visit to discuss the details of the soil report and your possible next steps.
We hope to involve community gardens, home gardens, school gardens, church gardens, hospital/ governmental gardens, and any other specialty growing operations.
The best part is it’s all at no cost to YOU, the landowner!

Who is eligible?
Residents of DeKalb & Steuben County are eligible for the FREE – soil sampling service and technical assistance.
If you are not a resident of DeKalb or Steuben County and are not eligible for the program. You can still contact the SWCD for technical assistance on soil health management.
