The Steuben County SWCD and Purdue Extension of Steuben County have placed a geocache in each of the twelve townships of Steuben County. In addition to the paper geocache log, the SWCD and Extension office have added a special educational aspect to the journey – inside each geocache is information about the soil on which one stands when they find each cache. Individuals can learn more about the ground beneath their feet and gain an appreciation for this precious resource at each stop while enjoying the thrill of the hunt. Then, using a GeoTrail Passport (obtained from the cache or downloaded here), the geocache hunter can make a rubbing of the soil symbols that are on the side of the cache in each township.
Once a geocache hunter has completed the GeoTrail and collected all twelve rubbings, they can take their completed passport to the Steuben County Purdue Extension Office during normal business hours to claim a small prize. The Extension Office is located in Suite 1A in the Community Center at 317 S. Wayne Street in Angola.
