Food Plot Seed Program

For over twenty years, Pheasants Forever Northeast Indiana Chapter 182 has been providing free wildlife food plot seed to Soil and Water Conservation Districts in Northeast Indiana.  The program is intended to assist local landowners who are planting wildlife food plots to enhance wildlife and wildlife habitat.  Planting food plots provides a place for wildlife to forage in late fall, winter and early spring.  Typically left standing over winter, food plots encourage wildlife use by providing a dependable food source to carry game through the winter.  Wildlife that benefit include deer, turkeys, pheasants, rabbits, songbirds, and others.

Chapter 182 generously provides glyphosate resistant corn, glyphosate resistant soybeans, sorghum, and sunflower.  Distribution of this seed occurs around the beginning of May.  The seed is bagged in either quarter-acre or one-acre coverage bags.  Ideal planting time is mid-May through mid-June for maximum wildlife food value.

Food Plot seed is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.  When the SWCD receives the seed, individuals that have signed up on our Wildlife Food Plot contact list are telephoned by staff notifying them when the seed will be available.

The Steuben County SWCD Board of Supervisors and office staff want to thank Pheasants Forever for annually donating this food plot seed for our County landowners.  They have been instrumental in helping us reach our goal of increased wildlife enhancement throughout the county.

Indiana Pheasants Forever is a nonprofit conservation organization dedicated to the protection and enhancement of pheasants and other upland bird populations in North America.  The mission of Northeast Indiana Chapter 182 is to conserve and to enhance pheasant and other wildlife populations through habitat restoration, improvements in land, water, wildlife and water management practices and public awareness and education.

If you would like to be added to the Wildlife Food Plot contact list, please call the office.  More information about food and cover plots is available from Pheasants Forever.
